News Update: June 16/26: The SharkSQL OpenVMS X86/IA64 field test kit was upgraded to v5.0-4. In addition to a few bug fixes, the kit now contains a new sample Personnel database utility for examining how to create, load, test and restore a SharkSQL database. This kit also includes a new PostgreSQL pgbench based benchmark utility for read-write/read-only testing of a SharkSQL database. Reference release notes and readme files in the documentation library.
Background
The primary IT focus of the past 30+ years has been on recovering from the distributed server hardware deployment and management strategies of the 1980/90’s.
The IT designs of the next 30+ years will be on reducing server software licensing, management complexities and support costs while increasing security and performance optimizations at all levels.
SharkSQL was planned and designed to address these requirements.

- Fully supports VSI OpenVMS multi-site, high availability, active-active homogeneous clusters. No database sharding (partitioning) required
- Binary compatible between different OS platforms. Copy SharkSQL database from source to target server, make OS specific config changes on target server and run application
- True distributed DB engine with embedded two-phase commit (2PC) provides distributed database consistency. No complex external utilities or tools, no more “eventual” data consistency, no “additional” license requirements
- Supports wire protocols for MariaDB, MySQL, Connectors & Interfaces. This enables SharkSQL and services to function as drop-in replacements for MariaDB, MySQL databases allowing existing clients, drivers, and BI tools to connect with few modifications
- Very high performance (out of the box) compared to other databases. Reduces need for complex tuning processes of internal database parameters
- Security features available that far exceed SQL standards and many other databases – page and record encryption, read only partitions, TCP/IP packet based network encryption (encryption key changes whenever a TCP/IP data packet is sent/received), database admin can not modify content of audit logs
- Simplified developer environment. Easy to install, configure, use and manage high availability and resilient distributed databases – even for new developers and database admins
